Description

7 St Marys Street is a gentry house, now used as offices, constructed from coursed blue lias stone that is inscribed to resemble ashlar. The building features a slate roof and rebuilt red brick end stacks. It stands two storeys tall with an attic and has a four-window range of 12-pane sash windows, each with cut stone voussoirs and slate sills. The main front does not have a door and is adorned with a moulded timber modillion cornice and a central pediment, which is complemented by matching raking cornices and a tripartite small-paned lunette. The facade is built against the slope and has a shallow terrace in front, which blocks the original basement windows and includes spearhead iron railings.

The west end wall has two 20th-century attic windows. The northwest rear wing is two storeys high and features a red brick north end stack with a two-window range. The ground floor includes a six-panel door with a traceried overlight and a timber classical porch supported by two oddly proportioned columns, pilaster responds, a triglyph frieze, and a cornice that has similar modillion brackets to those on the main house. There are two first-floor windows, but only the one above the door is original.

There is a small addition beyond the rear wing, which is also two storeys high and has a brick north end stack. It features a first-floor 16-pane sash window, a ground floor door, and an 18-pane fixed shop window with cemented window heads. The inner front has a basement storey.

The rear courtyard is three storeys high and includes a large arched stair-light in the centre of the rear wall, flanked by rubble stone wings on either side. Inside, there is an open-well stair with plain stick balusters and a ramped handrail. The ground floor features six-panel doors, shutters in the ground floor rooms, and mid-19th century marble fireplaces in the east and west rooms on the ground floor.
