Description

Avondale is a house that may have been refronted in the early 19th century. It is constructed of painted blue lias ashlar with a slate roof and features a brick stack at the west end. The building is two stories tall and has a three-window range of sashes, which have cambered painted heads and painted slate sills. The upper windows are 12-pane sashes, while the lower ones are 16-pane sashes. There is a central ledged door, which is diagonally braced behind, set in a heavy oak moulded doorframe that dates from the 17th or early 18th century. The Regency-style painted timber doorcase has reeded piers, caps with oval plaques, and brackets supporting a shallow hood. At the rear, there is a large wall stack with an old brick shaft, and the west end wall features a single 12-pane attic window.

The south-west rear wing has a low ground floor facing Carrier's Lane, with two windows on this level, three windows on the first floor, and two dormers at the eaves. It has a stone stack at the south end, with a brick upper section.

Inside, the house retains extensive features from the early 18th century, including a full-height dog-leg staircase leading up to the attic. This staircase has a closed string with a pulvinated frieze and turned balusters, which are boarded-in except for the attic, along with a moulded handrail. A long 30-pane stair light faces over the rear court. The main house has a five-bay collar-truss roof made of heavy timbers, while the rear wing has a similar four-bay roof. There are also some early 19th-century details on the ground floor, including fluted pilasters at the elliptical arch of the hall.
