Description
The Old Custom House, now used as shops, is a former Custom House built in coursed blue lias stone with a slate roof. The single-storey facade features three bays, originally all with tall recessed arched openings. Each arch has cut stone voussoirs, but the right bay has been altered with a large 19th-century shopfront that replaces the original opening.
The left arch contains fixed 20th-century small-paned glazing and a rendered top lunette, while the center arch has double doors with an overlight and a rendered lunette. The doors are six-panel with top glazing.
The shopfront on the right is flanked by pilasters, each topped with triglyphs on the fascia and a cornice above. It features large double panelled doors set back to the left, an overlight with a flattened arched head, and panelled reveals. The shop window consists of three large plate glass lights, with top lights above a thin transom.
At the southeast, there is a rear wing with a hipped roof, which has been clad in roughcast in the 20th century. The east end wall of the Custom House includes a 20th-century plate glass window below a large late 19th-century tripartite sash window.
