Description
35 High Street is a pair of houses with shops, built in the 19th century. The buildings are constructed of stucco and feature slate roofs along with a prominent red brick cross-axial stack. They rise three storeys with an attic and have a two-window range on each street side, along with a recessed curved one-window section at the north-west angle. The eaves are flat and bracketed, and each facade is topped with broad pediments that include paired four-pane sash windows. The second floor has nine-pane sashes, while the first floor features twelve-pane sashes, all with slate sills and moulded stucco hoods. The windows on the curved corner are also curved. There is a band between the floors.
On the ground floor, each facade has two shop windows made of plate glass with rusticated jambs, and there is a band above these windows. The High Street side has a door to No 36 on the right, which includes an overlight. The corner features recessed double doors with an overlight. The Saint Mary's Street front showcases a fine six-panel door on the left, complete with a large traceried overlight and a corniced doorcase that has fluted pilasters and panelled reveals. There is one additional twelve-pane sash window on the first floor above the door.
The glazing bar sashes on the first and second floors of No 36 have been replaced with aluminium, while the rest of the windows remain unaltered.
