Description
38 and 40 High Street is a house that was originally two dwellings, now featuring shops on the ground floor. It dates back to the 17th century and was refronted in the 18th century using bricks with red dressings. The building has a moulded red brick cornice and a parapet with stone coping. The roofs are twin old tiled roofs, with a mansard style on the left and a hipped style on the right, both having lead roll hips. The structure is two storeys high.
On the first floor, there are four 19th-century sash windows with divided glazing, which are flush set with exposed boxes and architrave surrounds. The ground floor of No. 38 features a 19th-century shopfront that has been significantly altered, with a pilaster on the left topped by a forward sloping recessed panel and a pediment motif above that holds an old fascia. The ground floor of No. 40 has a mid-20th-century shopfront, which includes a brick stallriser, oak display windows divided by mullions, a blind box, and a recessed fascia with a cornice above.
The north elevation, which faces East Street, is stuccoed and also two storeys high, with twin gables facing the street. On the first floor of No. 38, there is one modern casement window, while the ground floor has a recessed door in an architrave surround and one recessed mullion and transom casement window. For No. 40, the first floor has one flush-set sash window with glazing bars and an architrave surround, and the ground floor features a mid-20th-century oak shop window with small panes, accompanied by an entrance door to the right.
