Description
This is a mid-19th century commercial premises with living accommodation above, now used as offices. The building is constructed of stucco over brickwork, with a Welsh slate roof. It is three storeys high.
The first floor features two sash windows with divided glazing, set within panelled surrounds that have paterae (ornamental roundels) and projecting moulded cornices. The second floor has two lower sash windows, similarly treated with panelled surrounds. Panelled pilasters are located at the left and right ends of the front facade, topped with Corinthian capitals. A cavetto moulded eaves cornice runs along the top of the building.
The ground floor has an elaborate 19th-century shopfront, framed by stucco pilasters with foliated capitals and coved console brackets. The shopfront fascia features a dentil frieze and moulded cornice. There is a recessed central modern entrance door, and a modern brick stall riser to the shopfront. A modern entrance door is located on the left side, framed by reeded pilasters, moulded cills, and cornices.
The rear elevation, facing East Street, is three storeys high, with 20th-century brick infill on the ground floor. Above, the stucco facade has three 20th-century sash windows on both the first and second floors. The building is described in detail by Forrester in Timber Framed Buildings in Hertford and Ware (1964).
