Description

This building, comprising numbers 46 and 48 High Street, was originally two dwellings and now contains ground floor shops. It dates from the 17th century or earlier, but was substantially refronted in the mid-18th century, with further alterations occurring in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building has a timber frame and a brick front, which is currently whitewashed. The roof is tiled and hidden behind a parapet; three dormers were present in 1974 but have since been removed. The building is two storeys and has an attic. A plat band runs along the first floor, and the facade is topped with a brick dentil and moulded cornice. There are five flush-set sash windows: two to the left have divided glazing, three to the right have glazing bars, and there is a blank recess on the extreme right. On the left-hand side, an alleyway provides access to Leaside. The ground floor now has two modern shopfronts. The shopfront on the left (number 48) retains some features of a 19th-century shopfront, including moulded window frames and a carved console bracket partly concealed behind a modern box fascia fixed to the original 19th-century structure. The shopfront on the right (number 46) appears to be entirely a 20th-century reconstruction. A two-storey outshoot projects from the rear on the left side, with a whitewashed brick ground floor, pebbledashed upper section, and a hipped roof covered in old tiles.
