Description
No. 44 High Street is a house that has been converted into a shop, originally built in the 17th century with alterations made in the 19th century and extensive changes during the mid-20th century. The building features a timber frame, with the ground floor underbuilt in yellow brick from the mid-20th century. The first floor is covered in colourwashed pebbledash and has three sash windows with glazing bars that are flush set within an architrave surround. The roof has a red machine tile and an eaves cornice, with the gable end facing west, which includes two first floor sash windows and one attic sash window on the end elevation.
On the ground floor, there is a wide mid-20th century display window that is timber-framed with a mosaic stallriser, along with a recessed splayed entrance and an additional display window on the west elevation. The north elevation faces East Street and has been rebuilt in fletton brickwork during the mid-20th century, with colourwashed pebbledash above. The first floor features two 18th century mullion and transom windows with fixed glazing. This building occupies a prominent site between High Street and East Street and is listed for its group value.
