Old Tollgate Cottage

Old Tollgate Cottage is a single-storey building constructed from local stone rubble on boulder foundations. The original small slate roof was replaced in October 1998. The main living room opens onto an open verandah at the east end. It features one six-paned window with deep glazing bars facing east, a paned window on the north side with the central four panes hinged for toll collection, and a smaller window on the south side of the inner room. There is a stack on the east gable end. At this end, a lean-to roof supported by two timber posts extends over a store at the north corner and provides shelter for the framed and battened entrance door, along with a third window facing the road junction. A half-brick wall has been constructed between the posts, extending along the south side as a low retaining wall.

Inside, the living room occupies the east end of the cottage, featuring a fireplace with its original fire beam set across the corner to accommodate the gable end window. A stone draught partition screens the fireplace from the entrance. The interior was undergoing re-ordering at the time of inspection but largely retains its original layout, with renewed partitions in the inner room creating a narrow service passage lit from the west gable end. New floor joists have been added to the loft chamber, which is illuminated by a small window in the west gable end.
