Description
The Polchar in Rothiemurchus is a single-storey building designed by Elizabeth and Jane Grant between 1812 and 1814. It features a symmetrical five-bay south-facing front and an irregular rear with two gables and an attic floor. The exterior is constructed of harl pointed rubble. A later 19th-century gabled porch covers the central door on the south front, which is flanked by small lattice-pane windows. There is a substantial ridge stack at the center of the roof. The east elevation has two gables, with three-light sash windows on the ground floor and two-light sash windows on the first floor, where two-pane glazing has replaced the original lattice panes. One gable has a catslide roof. At the rear, there is a later 19th-century wing that includes a single ground floor window and a single dormer window. The original thatched roof has been replaced with graded local slate.
