Free Church, Rothiemurchus

The Free Church in Rothiemurchus, designed by architect D. Macmillan from Aberdeen in 1886, is a Romanesque-style rectangular church. It features long elevations on the east and west sides, with a projecting gabled entrance porch at the northwest. The church's western frontage and northern gable are made of coursed pink granite, while the rear and southern gable are constructed from harl pointed granite rubble, accented with tooled sandstone dressings.

The entrance in the porch has a round-headed hood-mould and double-leaf plank doors adorned with ornate cast-iron hinges, topped by an apex bellcote. The three-bay western elevation includes paired round-headed windows that are connected by a continuous blind arcade featuring pendant detailing that matches the cushion capitals of the nook-shafts. The northern gable is flanked by similar blind arcading and has three long lancet windows with square paned leaded glazing. The roof is slate with a tile ridge.

On the southern gable, there is a small gabled Minister's room. Inside, the church is oriented north to south and features a pine plan dado and pine pews. The raised Minister's desk has a panelled front and is situated under a canopied tester, with flanking round-headed doorpieces leading to the vestry and panelled doors. The main entrance also has similar double-leaf doors and a round-headed doorpiece. A mural memorial commemorates Rev. James Martineau, who lived from 1805 to 1900.
