Description

Buccleuch Parish Church, located at 33 Chapel Street in Edinburgh, was built in 1756 and remodelled in 1866 by David MacGibbon. This former church features a roughly cruciform plan in the Gothic style, with three bays, pointed and basket-arched openings, and a short spire with lucarnes. The entrance elevation is constructed from squared and snecked rubble, while the sides and rear are made of random rubble, with ashlar dressings.

The east entrance elevation is symmetrical, featuring a pointed two-leaf timber panelled door with decorative door furniture set in a gabled porch at the center, which has a trefoil datestone in the gablehead. Above the door are three hoodmoulded pointed arch traceried windows, and a clock is positioned in the gablehead. To the outer right, there is a low engaged spire with an octagonal roof.

The south elevation displays a regular arrangement of shouldered arch windows, with a central bowed projecting bay topped with a finial. The north elevation includes an advanced gabled bay, added around 1810, which features a pointed arch window and a ball finial.

The church has leaded lights and some stained glass, although most windows were boarded up as of 2007. The roof is covered with grey slate, featuring some later rooflights, lead flashings, and a louvred ventilator at the ridge.

Inside, the church has been subdivided into two floors but retains many original fittings, including an integrated pulpit, organ loft, and galleries. Notable features include timber and part-glazed screens in the narthex, which have art nouveau door handles and stained glass panels.

Surrounding the church is a graveyard enclosed by a high boundary wall with ashlar coping. The graveyard predominantly contains 18th and early to mid-19th century gravestones set against the wall.
