Description
The Church of Scotland on Eigg, built in 1862, is a simple rectangular church characterized by long north and south elevations. It is constructed of rubble with tooled ashlar dressings, all finished in a pale colour wash. The southeast entrance features a pointed-headed hoodmould and a double leaf plank door. The long elevations are illuminated by two sets of triple pointed-headed lancets that flank a central buttress, with lattice pane glazing. The east gable is also lit by three long pointed-headed lancets. Each corner of the church has a diagonal buttress, and it has a steeply pitched slate roof topped with an apex cross at the east gable.
Inside, the church has a simple design with pine lining and some stencil decoration. There is a small gallery across the east end, a plain panelled Minister's desk or pulpit, and a timber ceiling made of rafters and purlins with saltire braces.
The church is accompanied by a burial ground enclosed by a rubble wall, containing a few graves of past Ministers. There are two pedestrian entrances marked by simple rubble gate piers topped with boulder ball finials.
