Description

Dornoch Free Church, built in 1844 and renovated in 1896, is a church constructed from rectangular rubble with tooled ashlar dressings. It features wide east and west gables, each with a projecting central section; the east side includes a single-storey Minister's room. The west gable has a round-headed entrance at its center, adorned with a continuous hoodmould and string course, along with three pointed-headed lancets above, all sharing similar detailing. Diagonal buttresses rise to finials at the west front, and there is an apex bellcote topped with a pyramidal roof. The west gable also has a long round-headed window in the outer bays, with similar windows in the six-bay flanks, all beneath a slate roof.

Adjacent to the church is the church room, which was formerly the Free Church School, built in 1844. This single-storey T-plan building is situated immediately south of the church and is made of rubble with tooled ashlar dressings. It features round-headed windows with multi-pane glazing and apex ball finials, also topped with a slate roof.

To the rear of the church is a burial ground enclosed by a rubble-coped wall. The entrance includes gate piers and a frontage retaining wall, with a pair of square ashlar gate piers topped with square caps. The low coped retaining wall is complemented by plain spearheaded cast-iron railings and a matching pair of gates.
