Description
The War Memorial in Glen Rinnes, designed by Matthews and Mackenzie from Aberdeen, dates back to 1883. It is a simple rectangular Gothic church featuring five-bay buttressed long north and south elevations, with a gabled entrance porch at the northwest and a minister's room entrance at the east gable. The building is constructed from pinned tooled pink Ben Rinnes granite, with tooled granite dressings. The pointed-headed windows along the long elevations are complemented by triple lancets on the west gable and a rose window on the east gable, all featuring square leaded glazing. The church has apex finials and a ridge bellcote on the west side, which has cusped facets and a small spire covered in fish-scale slate, topped with a cast-iron weathervane. The roof is slate with a red pottery ridge.
Inside, all original fittings and decoration remain intact. The pulpit is located at the east, featuring a finialled backboard and a finialled and cusped front. There is decorative cast-iron balustrading enclosing the chancel, with a clerk's desk in front of the communion table. A gallery at the west has a balustraded front, and the interior includes a pine dado with a stencilled frieze and pine pews. The roof is braced pine.
The property is enclosed by a low coped wall with decorative cast-iron railings and a matching pedestrian gate at the road frontage, while a coped rubble wall surrounds the rest of the site. A war memorial stands by the entrance gate.
