Description
The Primary School on Mary Avenue in Aberlour was built by Brown and Watt from Aberdeen between 1896 and 1897, and it is constructed from tooled granite with tooled ashlar sandstone dressings. This purpose-built school features a two-storey, three-bay central block that houses a full-height central hall, which is fronted by a single-storey, three-bay northwest entrance front that connects to flanking gabled school rooms. The central door is situated beneath a shaped and finialled datestone, with tripartite windows on either side. The tripartites have a longer center light under a dummy pediment in the outer gabled bays, each of which includes a glazed oculus gablet topped with a decorative ashlar apex finial.
The southwest elevation has five bays, with two longer windows that break the wallhead in slightly advanced gabled bays. The northeast elevation is irregular and includes some modern additions. The school features multi-pane glazing, a coped wallhead, and apex stacks, along with slate roofs that have ridge ventilators.
