Description

The Old Manse, built by William Robertson between 1837 and 1838, is a symmetrical two-storey house with a raised basement and three bays, facing south. The exterior is harled with tooled grey granite margins and dressings. The central door is accessed by a flight of steps that oversail the raised basement, featuring a cast-iron handrail, though some decorative balusters are missing. The doorway has a bracketed cornice and a rectangular fanlight above.

The house has regular two-bay west and three-bay east return gables, with some blocked windows on the lower first floor, and features 9- and 12-pane glazing. There are two long central stacks and a piended platform roof that is slated with projecting eaves. A later flat-roofed wing has been added to the rear.

Adjacent to the main house are the former stables, which consist of a small two-storey, two-bay rubble structure that abuts the garden slope. The stable entrance is on the ground floor and is approached from the lane, with a loft elevation only at the garden level, topped with a slate roof.

The garden wall is made of harl pointed rubble and is coped, fronting the road. The entrance is flanked by simple square ashlar piers that have shallow pyramidal caps.
