Description
The Primary School on John Street in Craigellachie was designed by Brown and Watt from Aberdeen and built between 1898 and 1900, with a date of 1900 marked on the building. It is a single-storey, four-bay school that sits on a sloping site, revealing a plain two-storey rear elevation. The structure is made of rubble with tooled ashlar dressings.
The front features a regular gabled design with slightly advanced gabled entrance porches in the outer bays, each porch having a segmental-headed light above and being slightly wider than the doorway. A small circular turret is corbelled out from the shallow re-entrant angle formed by the northeast porch, which has a painted wooden arcade at the upper stage supporting a facetted and slated conical roof.
The central two bays are illuminated by large tripartite windows, each with a round-headed centre window. Some original lozenge glazing remains in the upper light, while modern multi-pane glazing has been installed elsewhere. The building has plain bargeboards with dummy timber-frame detailing in the gablets, original rainwater goods, a single ridge stack, and is covered with green Cumbrian slates featuring a red potter ridge.
The school is fronted by a low coped rubble wall with spearhead cast-iron railings, which are stiffened at intervals by thicker bars with crown finials. A rubble wall encloses the playing field at the rear.
