Description
Fort William Primary School, built around 1876 by Alexander Ross, features two-storey and single-storey gabled school buildings constructed from rock-faced granite with red sandstone dressings and stone mullions.
The principal block is a two-storey U-shaped structure, flanked by a lower single-storey and attic block on the left. The U-plan is defined by gabled outer bays, each containing tripartite windows on both floors. The first-floor windows are stepped at the center, with a relieving arch above and an oculus or clock in the gablehead, topped with terracotta finials. The center has two bays with bipartite windows that break the eaves at the first floor, featuring gabled dormerheads. There is a lean-to porch in the re-entrant angle on the left with a pointed arch doorway. To the right, a three-stage tower in the re-entrant angle has dividing string courses, a pointed arch door at the ground level, and blind arrowslits above, with pointed arch hoodmoulded windows at the third stage, culminating in a pyramidal roof. The main ridge has a leaded base from a former ventilating spire. The lower block mirrors this design with gabled dormerheads breaking the eaves.
The single-storey block has a harled rear and a principal elevation featuring a band course at the ground level. The center has two advanced gabled bays with stepped and hoodmoulded tripartite windows, one gable adorned with a decorative metal finial. To the right, there is another gabled tripartite window flanked by smaller single windows and an additional window on the outer left. The roof has ridge ventilators and gabled louvred ventilators. There are gabled projections and a lean-to open porch at the rear. Both blocks have horizontal-pane, timber sash and case windows, with plate glass or four-pane windows in the smaller ones, and are covered with grey slates and metal flashing.
The interior was not seen in 1996.
