Description
Merkinch Primary School, located on Telford Road in Inverness, was built in 1876, likely designed by Alexander Ross. This single-storey school has an extended H-plan layout and features a bellcote and gabled elevations. It is constructed from pink squared, snecked rubble with yellow ashlar dressing.
The main front is long and symmetrical, consisting of six central bays with two doors at the centre and windows that have pointed heads. This is flanked by wider, advanced gabled cross wings, each displaying hoodmoulded stepped tripartite windows and five-bay side elevations. The lower entrance bays are recessed beyond the wings. The gable heads feature trefoil, louvred openings, while the skews are adorned with kneelers and gablet skew putts. The school also has a gabled bellcote and slate roofs with gabled ventilators. The rear blocks share similar architectural details, although some modern additions have been made.
Adjacent to the school is a schoolhouse built in 1896, which is a two-storey L-plan house that reflects the design of the school. It includes a porch in the re-entrant angle and a canted window with tripartite windows above in the southwest-facing gable, along with tripartite windows on both floors to the east of the porch. The schoolhouse also has a slate roof and is complemented by a low retaining wall with cast iron railings.
