Description

Glentower is a house located on Auchintore Road in Fort William, designed by Sydney Mitchell and dated 1889, with some early 20th century additions and alterations featuring Scottish Renaissance details. The building is two stories with an attic and has an asymmetrical four-bay facade facing north. It is finished in red harling, with contrasting painted tooled ashlar dressings.

The entrance is near the center, featuring a door under a corniced, segmentally pedimented doorpiece that includes a port-hole light to the right. This entrance is sheltered by an early 20th century slated canopy that connects a round drum tower on the west side to a projecting square tripartite bay window on the east side. The canopy is supported by decorative wooden struts and trellis work.

The round drum tower rises to full height and is topped with a slated, bellcast domed roof adorned with lead finials. There are two dormers that break the eaves, each under shaped gablets, with a long four-light window situated between them. Additionally, there are two small swept dormers in the roof.

On the east gable, there is a canted single-storey wing that was formerly an observatory, along with an early 20th century single-storey and attic, two-bay wing at the rear. This rear wing also features a shaped gabletted dormer head and a canted bay window with a central glazed door. The building includes diminutive gable attic windows, multi-pane glazing, and a moulded string course linking the ground and first floor windows. Original rainwater goods, margined coped end stacks, crowsteps, and slate roofs complete the structure.
