The Square, Candacraig House

Candacraig House is a substantial former coach house, likely built in the mid to late 18th century, with alterations made in 1835 and later. It is a two-storey, five-bay structure with a rectangular plan and a piend roof. The building features flanking single-storey and attic piended ranges connected by a long altered link, forming a U-shape around a courtyard at the rear. It is located immediately west of Candacraig House.

The exterior is harled with stone margins and quoin strips, and the rear is constructed of snecked rubble with ashlar dressings. The south elevation is symmetrical, showcasing a three-arch arcade at the center beneath two dormer windows that break the eaves, with almost full-height arches on the outer bays, all of which are blocked. The north elevation includes a stone forestair on the left. The east range has a piend roof to the south and a hayloft opening on the eastern elevation. The west range, which was formerly a laundry, features horizontal louvered openings near the eaves.

The building has small-pane glazing patterns, primarily in timber sash and case windows, with vertical astragals on the rear of No 3 at the first floor. The rear of the coach house has a top-opening window that is out of character. The roof is covered with graded grey slates and includes modern rooflights. There are coped ashlar stacks with some cans, and ashlar-coped skews with block and moulded skewputts.

Inside, the interiors are largely modern, but No 3 retains its staircase and timberwork, along with a large ground floor laundry space.
