Description

The Walled Garden at Candacraig House likely dates from the 18th century, with various later additions, including a summer house from the 19th century. This well-preserved early walled garden features partly crowstepped walls and retains fine gates. It is located to the northeast of the house on sloping ground that falls to the southeast. The garden has an approximately rectangular shape with a V-plan at the southern end and a dividing wall running east to west. The northern end is subdivided by a path running north to south, and the walls are made of coped, snecked rubble.

The garden includes a square-plan, coped ashlar pond with a central pier located in the northern section.

The summer house, also referred to as the engine house, is a single-storey structure built of slated rubble over a raised basement. It has a single bay and is situated on the western boundary of the southern garden. The summer house features a bowed projection to the west, which is outside the garden wall, and has pointed arch windows with decorative astragals, as well as an ashlar ridge stack.

Inside, the summer house has moulded cornices on the coomed ceiling and a horseshoe grate set in a timber fire surround.

The garden is accessed through reduced square-section ashlar gatepiers that have moulded cornices and large ball finials. The entrance features two-leaf decorative ironwork gates. There are additional gates in the dividing wall, which are also two-leaf ironwork gates adorned with intricate designs of intertwined vine leaves and grapes.
