Description

The coach house, probably designed by Sir Robert Smirke around 1820, originally formed a U-plan stable court. An engine house block was likely added to the north shortly afterwards, with further alterations occurring later; it is now converted into six houses. The building is constructed of red sandstone, squared and coursed on the inner elevations, with Cullalo stone used for the south and east rear extensions. A base course and band course divide the storeys on the exterior, and a cornice tops the structure.

The east range originally had an 11-bay exterior, arranged symmetrically as 1-3-3-3-1. A slightly advanced, pedimented section with a single storey and attic occupies the central three bays, featuring a blind arcade at ground level (with a doorway in the centre and two hayloft openings). Three bays flank this, separated by pilasters. A doorway is located to the right. The outer bays are slightly advanced with blind arched recesses. An outer engine house bay is situated to the right, featuring a wide machinery door and a hayloft door. The courtyard elevation has four advanced bays of carriage and hayloft section in the centre, with tall carriage openings with boarded doors, and hayloft openings with semi-circular dormerheads. The gable ends are pedimented. Three recessed bays flank the centre, and have been filled in on the left and incorporate a lean-to shelter on the right.

The north range is symmetrical, with a five-bay design, and features an advanced engine house block to the exterior on the left, with a slightly advanced, pedimented centre of three bays. Windows are present in each bay at both ground and first floors. A modern addition is at ground level on the left. The courtyard elevation displays five slightly advanced bays to the right, containing a machinery door (now filled with a door and window), flanked by windows. Three small first-floor windows are also present. A doorway is located in the re-entrant angle.

The south range has a seven-bay exterior elevation featuring a blind arcaded ground floor, five windows, and two doors. Three pedimented bays are slightly advanced to the right. There are two first-floor windows to the right, and a shallow depressed archway (now blocked with a window) with a window above. The windows are a mix of small-pane sash and case windows, and some modern casements. The roof is covered with grey slates, and modern skylights have been added. Coped ashlar ridge details and wallhead stacks are present, with decorative cans retained.

The cobbled courtyard includes a saltire cross pattern. Quadrant walls with coursed sandstone and ashlar coping close the court to the west, with simple square ashlar gatepiers. A terrace wall is located by the north elevation on falling ground, constructed of rubble with semi-circular coping and ashlar dies. A further quadrant wall runs by the drive and includes a pyramid-capped pier.
