Description

The Joiner's Workshop in Whittingehame, dated 1878, is a single-storey and attic, three-bay cottage that is adjoined by a slightly recessed former workshop, also single-storey and three-bay, with a rectangular plan. The building is constructed of squared and snecked red sandstone, featuring stugged ashlar dressings and droved, chamfered reveals. It has segmentally arched openings and stone mullions.

On the west elevation, the cottage is located to the north and includes a gabled porch with modern infill at the center, flanked by bipartite windows. There is a small gablet skylight at the center with a cusped timber surround. The attic features windows that break the eaves in the outer bays, with half-piended gabled dormerheads and bipartite windows. The three-bay former workshop to the south has bipartite windows to the left and at the center, and a tall, wide doorway to the outer right, which breaks the eaves for a dovecot in the half-piended gablehead that includes two tiers of flight-holes.

The north elevation has two single windows that are widely spaced at ground level, and a date diamond panel in the gable wallhead. The east elevation features a half-piended roof to the gable end, with small-pane or four-pane glazing patterns in the sash and case windows. The roofs are covered with grey slate and have lead flashings. The cottage, porch, and gabled dormerheads have deeply overhanging eaves with decorative timber brackets and scalloped barge boarding. There are decorative wrought and cast-iron finials, along with a weathervane on the dovecot. The gable end stacks of the cottage are capped, and there is a lean-to modern garage projecting at an oblique angle by the former workshop door.
