Description
Hawthornden Cottage is a later 19th century, single-storey cottage with an attic, designed in a three-bay, gabled L-plan. It is constructed from cream and pink squared and snecked sandstone rubble, featuring polished ashlar dressings. The building includes a base course, raised margins around the windows, and a stepped hoodmould over the door. The gables are adorned with decorative bargeboarding, which is likely a replacement, and the corners are finished with long and short quoins.
On the west elevation, there is an advanced, gabled porch at the re-entrant angle in the center. The porch features an architraved doorway with a square panel and a stepped hoodmould above, along with a bossed boarded door that has decorative wrought-iron hinges. A spike finial is located at the gablehead above the porch. To the right of the porch, there is a window on the return, and a window set back in the right bay at ground level, with a gabled dormer window above it. A gablehead stack is positioned at the southern end. The left advanced bay contains a three-light canted window with a flat ogee roof, and there is a window in the gablehead above it.
The cottage features zinc, diamond-pane timber sash and case windows, and is topped with a grey slate roof. Ashlar coped gablehead stacks are present at both the northern and southern ends, along with cast-iron rainwater goods. A modern brick garage is located to the south of the cottage.
