Description
The Lodge at Hawthornden Castle is an early to mid-19th century building that has undergone later alterations and additions. It is a single-storey structure originally designed with a rectangular plan and a canted bay at the south angle, which has since been extended to the northwest and northeast. The building is constructed of squared sandstone rubble, with random rubble used for the northeast addition and harled material for the northwest addition. It features shaped rubble and chamfered surrounds around the windows, a base course, raised painted cills, and an eaves course.
The southwest elevation, which serves as the entrance, is irregular with seven bays, including a five-bay extension set back to the left (northwest). This extension incorporates a two-bay garage and a three-bay canopied block at the center. Each remaining bay of the original lodge to the right has a pointed-arch window, and there is a window on the left return.
On the southeast elevation, there are pointed-arch windows at each end of the three-bay original canted block to the left, with a blank, extended wall to the right. The windows include fixed diamond-paned zinc pointed-arch windows and two-pane timber sash and case windows in the addition. The roof is covered with grey slate and has a piended design, with slate also used for the additions. A substantial ashlar coped stack is located at the center ridge of the original lodge, and there are cast-iron rainwater goods.
