Stables, Redcliff, Whittingehame

Probably William Burn, 1832. 2-storey, gabled house,

linked by single storey bays to 2-storey Estate Office on

falling ground. Stugged red sandstone, squared and

snecked with ashlar dressings; base course; chamfered

arrises to openings; stone mullions to bipartites.

S ELEVATION: symmetrical, 3 bays to house, with advanced,

full-height gabled porch at centre, corbelled to square at

1st floor tripartite doorway with mannered lintels, strip

fanlight and boarded door. Corbelled oriel with leaded

bays with hoodmoulded bipartites at ground and bipartites

breaking eaves at 1st floor in gabled dormerheads.

2 recessed bays to outer left with later bipartite window

and door, adjoined to 2, 2-storey bays of Estate Office,

slightly advanced to outer right; single windows at

ground and gabled dormerheads to 1st floor windows

breaking eaves, with blind slits in apex.

E ELEVATION: slightly advanced gable to left with

2 windows at ground, heavily corbelled rectangular oriels

with stone roofs to 1st floor bays, flanking blank panel;

2 linked, corbelled gablehead stacks. Lower wing with

bipartites to outer right bay with gabled dormerhead to

1st floor window.

W ELEVATION: 2 bays to Estate Office with valley of former

M-gable bridged between corbelled stacks. Hoodmoulded

windows to ground and 1st floor windows. Advanced

stack to house to E above single storey link. Entrance to

Office on N elevation.

N ELEVATION: pentice-roofed stone porch adjoined to house

gable. Small-pane glazing pattern to sash and case

windows. Grey slates. Gablet coped skews with consoled

skewputts. Coped drum stacks.

INTERIOR: winding stair with decorative cast-iron stair with

decorative cast-iron stair balustrade; panelled pine doors;

unusual plasterwork cornice; white marble chimneypiece

brought by William Flockhart from Rosehaugh (dem),

Black Isle.

STABLES: gabled single storey stable range to N, running

N-S, with stone as above, ashlar coped skews and

louvred ventilators to ridge of grey slate roof. 4 stable

doors to W side, with boarded doors and small-pane

fanlights; sliding machinery doors inserted in penultimate

bay to left.

PIERS, GATES AND BOUNDARY WALLS: square red sandstone

gatepiers to SW, with pyramid caps and coped quadrants.

Decorative wrought-iron gates.
