Description
Lady Eleanor's Cottage in Whittingehame is a picturesque single-storey cottage designed by William Burn in 1833. It is constructed from stugged squared and snecked red sandstone, featuring droved borders on the chamfered arrises and dressings, along with a base course. The windows are mainly bipartite and include timber mullions.
The southeast elevation is asymmetrical with three bays. At the center, there is an advanced gabled porch that has curved corners on the lintel of a wide doorway, which features an armorial panel in the apex and a two-leaf door. To the left, there is a gabled bay with a four-light stone roof canted window. On the outer right, a gable-headed bipartite window is set in a projecting panel. There is also a recessed projection to the east with a lower eave and a bipartite window on the south return.
The cottage has plate glass sash and case windows, with some modern glazing added. The roof is covered with large grey slates, and the chimney stacks are decoratively coped with a barley sugar design. Distinctive scrolled barge boarding with kingposts and finials was added to all gables in 1839.
The boundary walls and railings consist of rubble retaining walls topped with semi-circular coping. An ashlar-coped gate is accompanied by wrought-iron railings.
