Description

3 Damdale in Peebles is a picturesque single-storey and attic, three-bay L-plan suburban cottage built around 1890, with later additions. The cottage is constructed of whinstone, featuring cream sandstone dressings. It has overhanging eaves with exposed rafters, stop-chamfered arrises, and ground floor windows positioned hard under the eaves.

On the entrance elevation, there is a gabled open timber porch at the center, adorned with foliate S-scrolled bargeboarding, bracing, and finials. The porch features a panelled door with a three-pane fanlight and bolection-moulded architrave. To the left, there is a gabled bay with a flat-roofed two-sided canted window at ground level, which has ashlar mullions and transoms, along with a pierced frieze and cornice. A single window is located in the gablehead. To the right, there is a window at ground level and a gabled timber dormer with vine leaf bargeboarding and a finial. A modern dry-dash flat-roofed garage is attached to the outer right side.

The south elevation is two bays wide, with each bay featuring a window at ground level and a small gabled timber dormer. The left dormer has a bowed twelve-pane window and bargeboarding with pierced scrollwork, while the right dormer has a two-pane canted window with columns and Gothic fretted bargeboarding, topped with tall finials. A shouldered wallhead stack is located at the center.

The north elevation has a blank gable to the left, obscured by the garage at ground level, with an extension to the right. The west elevation features a gable to the right with a window in the gablehead, a lean-to back porch with a gabled door at the center, and an extension to the left, which includes a large slate-hung box-dormer.

The cottage has four-pane timber sash and case windows, grey slates that are fish-scaled on the dormers, and whinstone stacks with sandstone dressings and coping, topped with octagonal cans.

The boundary walls include a low sandstone base for removed railings, and there is a decorative timber pedestrian gate leading to the front door, featuring chevron boarding and a scrolled ironwork upper panel.
