Description

5 Damdale in Peebles is a single-storey and attic suburban cottage built around 1880. It features a three-bay design constructed from whinstone, with cream sandstone ashlar margins and long and short bull-faced quoins. The cottage has overhanging eaves and exposed rafters, along with stop-chamfered arrises.

On the front elevation, there is a panelled door at the center with a rectangular fanlight above it. Elaborate scrolled timber brackets support a gabled canopy that has foliate scrolled bargeboarding and a mask at the apex. To the left of the door is a window with a gabled dormer head, which also has decorative scrolled bargeboarding. The right bay is slightly advanced and features a flat-roofed canted ashlar window at the ground level, complete with a base course and cornice, as well as a window in the gable head.

The south elevation has a broad gable with a window to the left and a lean-to carport at ground level. The north elevation is mostly blank, with a later addition at ground level to the right and a wallhead stack at the center. The rear elevation has a gabled bay to the left and a gabled timber dormer to the right.

The cottage is fitted with 4-pane timber sash and case windows and is topped with grey slates. The whinstone stacks have sandstone dressings and octagonal cans. The interior was not seen in 1994.

The front wall features a low sandstone base intended for missing railings and an open timber pedestrian gate leading to the front door.
