Description

Allanbank Villa, located at 4 Murray Place in Peebles, is a single storey and attic suburban cottage dated 1883. It features three bays and is constructed from whinstone with cream sandstone ashlar margins, showcasing distinctive detailing. The building has overhanging eaves with exposed rafters, ashlar mullions, chamfered arrises, and timber dormers.

On the west elevation facing Murray Place, there is a central two-leaf panelled door topped by a four-pane rectangular fanlight. It is framed by a gabled timber porch supported by chamfered columns, with railings and a pierced arch. The roof is covered with fish-scale grey slates accented by green bands, along with terracotta crested ridge tiles and a finial. To the left of the door, there is a tripartite window with a hoodmoulded date stone reading 1883, and a piend-roofed quadripartite dormer that projects outward. To the right, there is a bipartite window and a tripartite dormer with a bracketed piended-gable. A dry-dash lean-to garage is attached to the outer right side.

The north and south elevations are blank gables. The east elevation is irregular, featuring a two-storey gable on the right and a flat-roofed single storey dry-dash addition on the left.

The windows are timber sash and case with plate glass, and the upper sashes of the dormers have six panes. The roof is finished with grey slates, terracotta ridge tiles, and finials, and there are coped apex stacks with sandstone dressings and octagonal cans.

The interior was not seen in 1994. The boundary walls consist of rubble with saddleback ashlar coping, accompanied by modern wrought-iron railings and boulder coping on the sides.
