Description
8 Cross Road in Peebles is a picturesque single-storey lodge dating from the mid-19th century, built from whinstone. The building features overhanging eaves with exposed rafters and simply decorated bargeboards.
The south elevation has three bays, with a gabled porch at the center that includes a diagonally boarded and framed door with two glazed panels. To the left, there is a single bay set back with a window next to the porch. On the right, a broad projecting gabled bay contains a large landscape window at the center. An arched pedestrian gateway is set back to the outer right, featuring a diagonally boarded, framed, and studded rectangular gate with decorative wrought-iron hinges. There are gatepiers and gates adjoining to the right, and a lean-to outhouse canted off to the outer left.
The east elevation also has three bays, with a projecting gabled gateway at the center that has an arched opening blocked by whin rubble, and a gatepier adjoined to the right corner. Small windows are present in the flanking bays.
The north elevation is not visible due to alterations made in 1994. The west elevation features a broad blank gable to the left and a projecting lean-to outhouse with a boarded door at ground level. The porch is set back to the right.
The lodge has timber multi-pane windows, both sash and casement, and is roofed with grey and purple slates, topped with a coped rubble stack.
The boundary walls are made of rubble whinstone with boulder coping. Square whinstone gatepiers with flat caps support boarded and framed two-leaf carriage gates that have decorative wrought-iron hinges.
