Description

Baron Cliff Cottage, located on South Ailey Road in Kilcreggan, is a mid-19th century single-storey cottage that was originally designed with two bays but now features a third bay addition. The building has a rectangular plan and is constructed from whinstone and sandstone rubble, with bull-faced dressings and margins, chamfered arrises, quoins, and a base course. It has projecting eaves and exposed rafters that include a trefoil detail.

The northeast elevation, which serves as the entrance, consists of two original bays with a modern third bay added to the outer right. There is a window on the outer left, and a modern dry-dashed and glazed porch with a gabled felt roof conceals the original door. The outer right features a modern advanced dry-dashed bay.

On the southeast elevation, there is a gable with a broad window at ground level and a small fixed and leaded window in the gablehead. The chamfered arrises are corbelled to the gable.

The cottage has 2-pane over plate glass and 4-pane casement windows on the modern additions. The roof is covered with grey slate and includes lead flashings, as well as octagonal cans on squat bases.

The property features a large pedestrian gate and gatepiers made of bull-faced stone, with a blind arch detail at the center of each pier and heavy moulded square caps topped with ashlar ball finials. There is a simple pedestrian gate next to the gatepier and the corner of the lodge, which has a stepped masonry overthrow.

Additionally, there is a whinstone boundary wall with harl-pointing and ashlar semicircular coping to the right of the pier, while a lower rubble wall with random quartz coping is located to the left of the lodge.
