Gates, Hartfield, South Ailey Road, Cove And Kilcreggan

The gates at Hartfield, South Ailey Road, Cove and Kilcreggan were designed by Campbell Douglas in 1859. They feature Egypto-classical gatepiers made of honey-coloured sandstone ashlar. The square piers sit on a base and have slender nookshafts in deeply filleted panels at the corners. The upper panel displays decorative blind arcading, topped with a cornice and very tall, needle-like obelisk caps. The main gatepiers in the center have truncated apexes and are flanked by smaller, identical gatepiers that frame pedestrian gates. Along Rosneath Road, there are disused gatepiers in an Egypto-Greek style, also made of ashlar and topped with squat obelisk caps.

The gates themselves are made of decorative wrought- and cast-iron, featuring a flowing pattern with quatrefoil panels. The boundary wall consists of a low plinth wall made of stugged squared and snecked sandstone with saddleback coping and cast-iron railings. The wall is punctuated by broad sandstone dies that are uncoped and have chamfered arrises. Additionally, there are cast-iron gatepiers on Shore Road that are similar to those on South Ailey Road.
