Description
Craigrownie Cottage dates to the mid-19th century but was extensively remodelled in the early 20th century. It began as a two-storey, L-shaped villa and is now an asymmetrical building. The exterior is a mix of rough harl (rough plaster) with sandstone dressings, and at the rear, the original cottage is revealed with rough harl, vermiculated (patterned) honey-coloured sandstone, and quartz pebble dressings. A moulded string course (horizontal decorative band) and advanced eaves (overhanging roof) are also present, along with exposed rafters (supporting roof beams).
The southwest-facing main elevation features a three-bay symmetrical block with a fourth, recessed entrance bay on the far left. A narrow, gabled bay is centrally located, featuring a quartz pebble podium with harl on the plinth (base), two ground-floor windows, a raised vermiculated cill (window sill), and a shield above. The first floor has three stepped, round-headed windows. Flanking bays contain large, tripartite windows (three panes) with timber mullions and gabled dormerheads, while a recessed bay on the far left has a door with a sandstone surround, keystone, and timber door with upper panes.
The southeast-facing elevation is asymmetrical, with a gabled block projecting to the left. A ground-floor window is on the left, with a narrow gable abutting to the right. A door is positioned on the ground floor, featuring quartz pebble moulding, a plaque inscribed 'Cead Mille Failte?' above the door, a stepped hoodmould, and a bipartite (two-part) window above. A recessed bay to the right has a quartz pebble ground floor and a single window on the first floor. A mid-19th century block abuts to the right, with a jerkin-headed (truncated gable) section, a small ground-floor window, a bracketed string course, a bipartite round-headed window on the first floor, and a tripartite round-headed window in a single-storey block.
The rear (northeast and northwest) elevations are asymmetrical, with the rear showcasing the original fabric of the cottage.
The windows are largely timber sash and case, with 12 panes and 8 panes over plate glass, and some plate glass windows. The later remodelling features a red tiled roof with swept eaves, terracotta ridging, rendered (plastered) and coped ridge stacks (chimneys), while the original work retains a grey slate roof with lead flashings, terracotta ridging, and a ridge stack with vermiculated coping.
The interior was not inspected in 1993.
The property is approached by stugged (roughened) gatepiers, modelled with spiralling, horn-like features on a quartz base. A whinstone plinth wall with droved rubble slab coping is joined by a balustrade wall with cruciform cast-iron panels, also with droved slab coping. Some panels have been infilled with timber.
Gatepiers leading to the former stable block consist of drum piers of whinstone and sandstone with harl pointing, an ashlar base, a decorative sea pebble collar, and a rusticated, graded cap.
A simple die sundial of ashlar with stop-chamfered arrises (edges) is present, along with a bronze gnomon (the part that casts the shadow) and face.
