Description
The main gate with gate piers on Newhailes Road in Musselburgh dates from around 1800. It features a pair of Classical ashlar gate piers with cornices that flank the drive and include round arched pedestrian gateways. Above the arches are blank tablets with guttae. The gate is accompanied by gentle, coped ashlar quadrant walls. The outer piers are square and made of ashlar, corniced, and have niches facing the roadside. Decorative wrought-iron gates and railings with arrowhead designs are present at the drive, gateways, and quadrants. Additionally, there are substantial sandstone rubble walls, which are harl-pointed, marking the former boundaries of the Newhailes estate.
