Gardener's Cottage, Newhailes, Musselburgh

Gardener's Cottage in Newhailes, Musselburgh, dates from the earlier to mid 19th century and features later extensions to the east and west. This single-storey cottage has a piend roof and is constructed from red sandstone rubble, with grey stone additions and droved ashlar dressings, although the pointing is regrettable. The south elevation has four irregularly spaced bays, with a central door accessed through a decorative timber Jacobean gabled porch, which has been boarded in and added later. There are two windows to the left and one in the later extension to the right, all featuring painted margins and diamond-paned timber bi- and tripartite casement windows.

The cottage backs onto a policy wall and has a flat-roofed addition to the north. It features overhanging eaves supported by timber brackets, purple slate roofing, corniced ridge stacks, and slate-hung box dormers on the east and west sides.
