Description
West Knowe is a single-storey, four-bay cottage that likely dates from the 18th century but appears to have been modified in the mid-19th century. It features a modern rear extension and is situated closely at right angles to a similar cottage. The exterior is constructed from harl pointed red sandstone rubble, with later dressings that are stugged and droved.
The west elevation faces a green and has two centre bays that are grouped closely together, likely both of which were originally doors; the right one has been blocked and converted into a window. There are windows in the outer bays. Both side gables have windows on the west side, with the northern elevation featuring a later window that has a cement rendered surround, flanked on the left by a similarly later door. The northeast angle of the cottage has rounded quoins.
The sash and case windows have a four-pane glazing pattern. The roof is covered with pantiles, featuring a slate easing course, and exhibits a distinctive early East Lothian skew formation with gables and stacks.
