The Smithy, Blacksmith's House, Stenton

The Old Smithy, also known as the Blacksmith's House, is a pair of cottages dating from the 18th and 19th centuries, currently functioning as a single-storey residence. The building is constructed from pink sandstone rubble, featuring stugged quoins and droved window margins.

On the southwest elevation, there is an irregular arrangement with a three-bay cottage to the right, which has a door flanked by windows. To the left, there are three bays where a former door has been blocked and converted into a window, alongside another window and wide machinery doors on the outer left.

The northeast elevation includes a gabled projection with a forge at the northern end, a blank gable that shows signs of a former opening or addition, a door on the left return, and a window on the right return. There is also a modern conservatory addition.

The building features a variety of glazing patterns, including diamond lead-paned casement windows, as well as plate glass and sash windows at the rear. The roof is covered with pantiles, and there are ashlar coped skews and later stone stacks.

Inside, the forge retains its hooded fire opening, with stone seats and bellows positioned to one side, along with carved initials. There is a grid of four square holes, referred to as "Witches Niches," on the shared wall.

An outbuilding, which is the earlier smithy, is located to the southwest of The Smiddy. This gabled block has an adjoining lean-to that serves as a garden house and tool shed, featuring a gabled porch that breaks the eaves above the doorway on the northeast side of the lean-to. A truncated stack remains on the building.

The property is also surrounded by rubble sandstone retaining walls at the rear garden and a low wall by the roadside.
