Description

Stenton School, possibly designed by William Lambie Moffat, was built in 1878. It is a single-storey school with a near T-plan layout and porches, located on an island incline at a fork in the road. The building is constructed from sandstone rubble with stugged dressings, featuring a base course and chamfered arrises. It has stone mullions and transoms, and the round-arch windows are adorned with cusping.

On the northeast elevation, there is an advanced gabled jamb at the center, which includes a tripartite window with a relieving arch above it. A clock is set in a circular panel at the apex of this gable. There is a single window on each return. The school has three-bay porches set in re-entrant angles on either side, each with a slightly advanced gabled entrance. The doorways feature fanlit designs with shouldered lintels, flanked by paired windows on each side. Above each doorway is a carved ribbon, inscribed "Boys" to the right and "Girls" to the left, with "1878" and "AD" set in shields above the respective ribbons. A flight of stone steps leads to the boys' entrance. At the center of the northeast jamb, there is a gabled corbelled bellcote attached to the ridge stack.

The east and west elevations each feature a tripartite window in the main gable, detailed as previously described, and both have gable end stacks. The southeast elevation is five bays wide, with a slightly advanced, wide gabled bay at the center that includes a tripartite window and stacks, along with decorative skewputts and apex finials. The roof is covered with grey slates and includes a ridge ventilator.

There is an outbuilding to the south of the school, consisting of a piend-roofed row of sheds against a retaining wall. This outbuilding is made of sandstone rubble and supported by cast-iron columns. It features three bays on each side of a small piend-roofed projection at the center, which has a doorway on the east return.

The school playgrounds are bordered by rubble coped retaining walls, which are situated on falling ground. These walls have concrete repairs and wrought-iron railings to the northwest, along with ashlar coping on the low walls to the north.
