Description

The Old School House on Main Street in Stenton is an early 19th century, two-storey, three-bay house with a rear extension dating from around 1820. It is constructed of pink sandstone rubble with droved ashlar dressings, some of which are painted, and features chamfered arrises. The west elevation includes a central door with a small-pane fanlight above, flanked by windows on both floors. To the outer left, there is a slightly recessed stable building with a piend roof, which has a door and a further piend-roofed addition projecting to the west. The Old School Hall, which is listed separately, is attached to the south.

On the east elevation, there is a large, piend-roofed 19th century, two-storey extension to the centre and left, featuring two large windows on each floor. The outer right bay of the original house has a window on each floor, and there is a doorway to the stable on the outer right, along with an outbuilding projecting to the east. The sash and case windows have a 12-pane glazing pattern, and the roofs are slate. The original house has ashlar coped end stacks and skews.

The retaining walls are made of ashlar coped, coursed sandstone, topped with decorative fleur-de-lys cast-iron railings and a gate, and are flanked by four square stugged ashlar gatepiers.
