Description
The Former Schoolmaster's House is a dwelling that dates from the early 19th century and has undergone some 20th-century alterations. It is constructed from coursed rubble sandstone with ashlar dressings, including chamfered quoins, though these features are now overpainted. The building has a hipped slated roof with rendered end wall stacks positioned centrally.
On the north elevation, the house is two storeys high and features three symmetrical bays. The central doorway is set within an ashlar doorcase and is topped by a shallow hood cornice. The flanking windows are glazing bar sashes, consisting of six panes over six, and are set within advanced ashlar frames. Above, there are three additional sash windows on the first floor. The east side wall has three sash windows, with one on the ground floor lacking glazing bars. At the rear, there is an attached setback bay connected to the former school, which is not of special interest.
This building was formerly part of the adjacent Brookfield School, which was established in 1826 and was damaged by fire in 1989.
