Description
Wanton Walls Farm is an earlier 18th-century U-plan farm steading located in Edinburgh. The complex features a two-storey, five-bay house at the center, with single-storey wings on either side that create an open courtyard. The building is constructed from harled sandstone rubble and has boarded timber doors, some long and short dressings, projecting cills, and crowstepped gables on the wings.
The southeast elevation is asymmetrical, showcasing the central five-bay block. An advanced flue of a wallhead stack runs through both the ground and first floors of the center. To the left and right of the stack, there are doorways, with a window to the left of the left doorway and a letterbox fanlight above the right doorway. There are two regularly placed windows on either side of the stack. An advanced piend-roofed bay to the right has a door on the left side of the ground floor, with modern additions adjoining to the right and a window on the left return. The gabled wing on the outer left features an oculus set in the gablehead, with some roof sections missing. There is a doorway to the right of the right return, flanked by a small link block to the center block, while the left return was not visible in 1999. The gabled wing on the outer right has a window in the center and an oculus in the gablehead, with the left and right returns also not visible in 1999.
The northwest elevation is asymmetrical and consists of four bays. The left side has a harled bay with a window on the first floor, flanked by another window to the right. The two flanking bays on the right display irregular fenestration. The southwest elevation is predominantly gabled and mostly obscured by the adjoining wing.
The windows are primarily four-pane timber sash and case. The house has a grey slate roof with stone and lead ridges, while the wings feature a red pantiled roof. The structure includes coped stone skews and coped harled gableheads, wallhead, and ridge stacks with circular cans, along with cast-iron rainwater goods. The interior was not seen in 1999.
