Description
Earshill is an earlier 19th century U-plan steading, primarily single storey, with a one and a half storey farmhouse at the center. It is constructed from whinstone rubble with sandstone dressings, featuring raised margins that are painted on the front, and has Scottish slate roofs.
The front elevation presents a near symmetrical three-bay farmhouse, highlighted by a slightly advanced central gabled bay. It has a two-light door with a multipane fanlight, recessed below a narrow round-headed six-pane window. The flanking bays contain stone mullioned bipartite windows at ground level and canted dormers on the first floor, both topped with pyramidal roofs. The gable end stacks are adorned with moulded copes and a blocking course. To the east, there is a single-bay link to the gabled end of the steading range, featuring one window in the link and two asymmetrical windows in the gable, the latter having four-pane upper sashes and six-pane lower sashes, both with lying panes.
The projecting skews and gablehead chimney stack add to the architectural detail. To the west, the link mirrors that on the east but includes flanking square ventilators below the eaves. The gabled end of the steading range has a pair of slit ventilators at ground level and a single slit ventilator at attic level, with the west gable ridge being taller than the east.
The rear elevation shows the west range as a single storey, which was being altered at the time of listing. The central block features three irregular bays of the farmhouse that are irregularly fenestrated, with out-of-character plastic-framed windows. The east range is shorter than the west and has a large double-doored opening to the east and a single door to the west. The rear gable end of this range has pair slit ventilators at ground level and a triangular dovecote entry at the attic.
On the west side elevation, there is a pair of slit ventilators to the east, followed by a door and then a single ventilator. The east side elevation includes one window, one door, two large windows, one small window, and five small circular ventilators below the eaves, which are now blocked.
