Description
Earl of Stair's Monument is an ashlar obelisk dated 1746 and restored in 1907. It stands on an inscribed and corniced pedestal, which is set upon a rock-faced base. The monument is located in woodland to the north of Newhailes House. It features a Latin inscription in memory of John, 2nd Earl of Stair, who served as second in command to George II at the Battle of Dettingen in 1743. There is also a bronze plaque that notes the recarving of the pedestal in 1907 for Sir Charles Dalrymple, Baronet.
