Description

North Lodge at Venlaw Castle Hotel, located on Edinburgh Road in Peebles, dates from around 1880. This single-storey, three-bay lodge features a gabled design with overhanging eaves and a large modern extension at the rear. The building is constructed from whinstone, accented with bull-faced cream sandstone dressings, while the extension has a dry-dash finish and a slate-hung first floor. Architectural details include long and short dressings, chamfered arrises, and eaves supported by pierced timber brackets.

On the south elevation, the entrance features an advanced gabled porch at the center, which includes a boarded door, a shouldered plate glass fanlight, and a finial. To the left, there is a gabled bay with a bipartite window and a framed blind square plaque in the gablehead. The right bay also has a bipartite window that breaks the eaves, topped with a gabled dormerhead. Both gables exhibit cross bracing and various Velux windows.

The west elevation, facing the road, is gabled with a projecting apex stack and a window to the right, while the extension is set back to the left. The east elevation features a blank gable with an apex stack, and the extension is set back to the right with a door at ground level. The north elevation is dominated by the modern extension, which projects at the center.

The original building has timber sash and case plate glass windows, while the extension features timber windows at ground level and Velux windows on the first floor. The roof is covered with grey slates, and there are coped sandstone apex stacks, with an octagonal can on the east side.

The gatepiers and boundary wall consist of square stop-chamfered ashlar gatepiers topped with flattened pyramidal caps. A low rubble quadrant wall with saddleback ashlar coping remains to the north, while a picket fence is present to the south.
