Description
South Lodge at Venlaw Castle Hotel, located on Edinburgh Road in Peebles, is an early 20th-century building that may include older materials. This large, picturesque single-storey and attic Tudor lodge sits on a raised basement, with the ground sloping down to the west. The exterior is harled and features overhanging eaves, bargeboards, and mock half-timbered gables. It has bipartite timber dormers with piend and platform roofs.
On the west elevation facing Edinburgh Road, the raised basement is visible. There is a projecting gable on the inner right, with a basement lean-to in the re-entrant angle to its left. To the left, a set-back bay contains a projecting piend-roofed tripartite ashlar window. In the central re-entrant angle, there is an angled gabled bay with a tripartite ashlar window that returns to the sides. The elevation also features two dormers.
The south elevation, which serves as the entrance, has a gable on the left with a projecting piend-roofed tripartite timber window that returns to the sides; to the right is a set-back panelled door.
The plain rear elevations include two dormers on the east side. The windows are timber with 6- and 9-pane configurations and casements. The roof is covered with terracotta tiles and has lead flashing, along with a cross-plan rendered stack.
The property is enclosed by stepped whinstone boundary walls topped with saddleback ashlar coping. There are three identical gatepiers to the east of the lodge, designed for both pedestrian and carriage access. These gatepiers are made of panelled cream sandstone ashlar, featuring a base, cornice, and ball on top, along with simple wrought-iron gates.
