Description

Fairholm, located at 11 Murray Place in Peebles, is a single-storey and attic, three-bay L-plan suburban cottage built around 1885. The structure is made of whinstone with cream sandstone dressings, featuring long and short studded rock-faced quoins and margins, as well as stop-chamfered arrises.

On the northeast elevation facing Murray Place, the central feature is a stop-roll-moulded shouldered ashlar doorcase that includes a two-leaf panelled door and a fanlight. Above the entrance is a swept-roofed canopy adorned with decorative lead flashing and fish-scale slates, supported by pierced timber brackets with corbel stops. This is flanked by bipartite windows that have lintels decorated with nailhead ornamentation. At the roofline, there are two piend-roofed canted timber dormers with segmental-headed windows.

The northwest elevation, which faces March Street, has a two-bay gable on the left side, featuring narrow windows at the ground level and a blank panelled shield in the gablehead. To the right is a single bay with a window at ground level and a piend-roofed bipartite dormer.

On the southwest elevation, there is a projecting gable to the left with windows on both floors, and a door located in the re-entrant angle to the right. The southeast elevation has a projecting blank gable on the right side.

The cottage features timber sash and case six-pane windows, grey slate roofing, ashlar-coped skews, coped apex stacks with sandstone dressings, and octagonal cans. Inside, there is an inner lobby door that includes an etched glass panel.

The boundary walls surrounding the property are low rubble walls topped with saddleback ashlar coping.
