Description
Red Lion House is an early 19th century, two-storey, three-bay end-of-terrace house located at 36 Biggiesknowe in Peebles, with a later service extension to the east. The building is constructed of whinstone with cream sandstone dressings, some of which have been replaced with cement. It features long and short quoins and has a regular arrangement of windows.
The north elevation, facing Biggiesknowe, is single storey with three bays and includes a pair of Velux rooflights. To the left, there is a blank wall of the extension that is slightly set back. The east elevation has a projecting two-storey gabled extension on the right, which contains a garage at ground level and a window above. To the left, there are windows on both floors of the main house.
The south elevation, which is the entrance, is symmetrical with two storeys and three bays. At the centre, there are steps leading up to an artisan-classical Ionic doorpiece featuring a pair of fluted columns and an entablature that supports a lion. The entrance has a panelled door with a diamond-paned letterbox fanlight. The extension is set back to the right and has a window on the first floor.
The house features timber sash and case 12-pane windows, a roof covered in grey slates, and an ashlar coped mutual skew with a coped whinstone apex stack.
The boundary wall to the south is low and made of whin, topped with semi-circular coping and modern railings.
